Deanna and I went to Vietnam in 2005. We didn't go to most of the popular American War sites, but we did visit the Cu Chi tunnels, north of Saigon/Ho Chi Min City. Here is Deanna climbing into a "tunnel," actually a hole in the ground.

These paintings illustrate American soldiers being caught in booby traps.

And here are hilarious animatronic representations of a field munitions factory. When the guide threw the switch, the figures went to work.

At another war museum, a Vietnamese septegenarian in military dress uniform warmly greeted me in French. He seemed very happy to confirm that I was American.

These museums and displays expressed pride in having repelled all colonial invaders. But in general, people seemed more proud of the country's achievements in rebuilding after the war, such as the "new road" in the picture, and showed no rancor towards us as Americans at all.
